Potassium peroxymonosulfate
Potassium Peroxymonosulfate is the potassium salt of peroxymonosulfuric acid. It acts as a strong oxidizing agent with a wide array of applications spanning from water treatment, organic synthesis, disinfection, textiles and plastics. Its significance has grown regularly across various industries due to its unique and effective properties.
This compound exists primarily in two forms which is the monopotassium salt with the chemical formula KHSO5 , and as a component of a more stable triple salt with the formula 2KHSO5·KHSO4·K2SO4 Potassium peroxymonosulfate is also known as Potassium monopersulfate, Potassium caroate, Potassium hydrogen monopersulfate, Potassium peroxomonosulfate, and Non-chlorine shock.
production process.
Physical Properties
Potassium peroxymonosulfate generally appears as a white, granular, free-flowing powder without any odor. The molecular weight of the triple salt is 614.76 gm/mol. Potassium peroxymonosulfate does not have a distinct melting point but it decomposes upon heating. It shows good solubility in water, with the values ranging from 250-300 gm/L at 20°C. The triple salt form is known to be more stable than pure potassium peroxymonosulfate (hygroscopic, readily absorbing moisture from the atmosphere).
Chemical Properties
Potassium peroxymonosulfate is a powerful oxidizing agent and reacts strongly with combustible materials, bases, and reducing agents. Certain metals, such as aluminum and galvanized containers, should be kept away due to potential reactivity. Potassium peroxymonosulfate can also oxidize halides to halogens (e.g., chloride to chlorine). It is a powerful oxidant with a standard electrode potential (E°) of +1.81 V. This high oxidation potential makes it effective in a broad range of chemical transformations and disinfection processes.
Potassium peroxymonosulfate Uses
Water Treatment
- Widely used in swimming pools and spas as a non-chlorine shock treatment to oxidize organic contaminants, thus improving water clarity and letting chlorine sanitizers to act more effectively.
- Used in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment to oxidize various pollutants, including cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, sulfides, disulfides, and sulfites in waste streams.
- Helps in eliminating taste and odor compounds.
- Used in controlling of algae growth.
- Used in removal of iron and manganese from drinking water sources.
